Don makes MIT Technology Review

This is cool, I just found out that MIT Technology Review published a report on my stuff. It actually made the print version! This is the Opportunity Knocks software that uses GPS to guide cognitively disabled people around. It’s also kind of cool that in addition to the real work, I took the picture that they used (although I don’t get credit for either anywhere – such is academia)

Help Andrea with her License Plate

Andrea writes:

“I am trying to figure out a vanity plate for my car. Could you please ask people to submit ideas on the Palmer Blog? …

These are the requirements:

8 digits but if you use all of them, one must be a dash, &, or a space.

For example: luv-nate or luv nate

The basic ones like:

“ice crem” are taken

So if someone could think of something creative.

You can get a heart before the words but then you can only have 6 digits
and one must be a space or dash.”

Don, Sandy, Theo and Joy get the silver medal (briefly)

Just a short note about a friend of ours: We have some friends that go to our church that work with an organization called “Atheletes in Action” that provide chaplains for collegiate sports teams and help counsel athletes about discovering and maintaining a healthy balance between their sports, and a spiritual life with Christ. One of the athletes is named Anna Mickleson and she also goes to our church. She was on the USA women’s rowing team in Greece and got a silver medal. She brought it into church on Sunday and let people look at it and hold it, so we got to hold the medal and see it. It was really heavy. It was cool. Anna’s bio is here.

Don III gets a fellowship

I just got word that I received a fellowship for 2004-2005:

“I have the great pleasure of informing you that you have been awarded the CSE Educator’s Fellowship for 2004-5. Yay!
This is a 9-month fellowship that provides a stipend at your RA level (RA2=$[xxxx]/mo), tuition, fees, and health benefits. The tenure of the fellowship is September 16, 2004 to June 15, 2005.
The fellowship was established in 1995, as a result of contributions from former CSE chairman Helmut Golde and other faculty, plus mathcing funds from the UW Fellowship Fund and the Microsoft Challenge.
Your name will be added to the Educator’s Fellowship Plaque, which will eventually be hung in the waiting area of the Graduate Program offices.
Congratulations!”

It was totally out of the blue – so I’m not sure why I got it, but its quite an honor I guess. :)

Southwest courts Larry II (updated)

Kate writes:

“Yesterday [Larry] got offered a job with Southwest. I don’t know any details except that he drove about 4 hours last night somewhere to get a drug test. Ya think he wants the job?”
Larry II clarifies:
“On Monday I was contacted by the Southwest Airlines People Department advising me that I had been approved by the SWA Decision Board for employment with the airline. The results of my complete background investigation are still pending but assuming they can’t turn up anything that the Top Secret military investigators couldn’t I will begin working for Southwest in January 2005. Initial ground training is 6 weeks long after which I will begin flying revenue flights immediately. My plan is to be based in Baltimore and to moveour residence in that direction (if not all the way to Massachusetts) by the summer! We are all very excited about these developments – but no more so than myDad who will finally get “The Pass” and start enjoying all those free flights that I’ve been promising him for the last decade…!!”
