Islamophobia

I've spotted a new word in some of my readings, "Islamophobia" . The word was coined as a result of Muslim outrage over a cartoon published in a Danish newspaper recently. Apparently the cartoon was offensive to a bunch of Muslims - I haven't seen it. The response has varied from thoughtful to the ever-present Muslim-in-the-street-screaming-with-a-burning-flag images which dominate Middle East news coverage. The thoughtful responses have been the ones using "Islamophobia," apparently the fear of Islam. Ironically it sounds like Muslims are taking a page out of the homosexual playbook whose proponents coined "homophobia." |
