Update on Uncle Mike 5

From Uncle Larry:

Mike and Nancy just left the house here at 38 Twin Hill Road. The long term outlook for recovery is good. The short term news is bad.
The biopsy from last week confirms cancer. Large cell cancer.
Please do not call the house. Mike and Nancy know that everyone is concerned but they have a lot to deal with in a short period of time. They ask that you do not call the house until the weekend.
Right now they are headed down to Town Hall and then over to Nana’s house to tell Mom and Dad the bad news.
On Thursday, Mike has to go back to Boston and have another P.E.T. scan. At that time he will meet with the Surgeon who will remove the mass. They have told him that they think they can get it all and it has not spread. We do not know if the negative report from the DR in Falmouth last year was inaccurate or the mass turned to cancer during the year. They will ask that question later. The news came down to him today as he was getting ready to leave the hospital with Nancy. They had already met with the team of Doctors that did the procedure last night. Last night they did not find any additional infection behind the mass. They opened the airway and removed more of the mass. How much remains now is not known to us.
That’s about it. If anyone needs to talk they can call me or Flora. Try to observe Nancy and Mike’s request that no one call until this weekend.
Best Regards, Larry

Flora and I just returned from Boston after seeing Mike at the Hospital. He is much better then yesterday when Nancy and I saw him. He does not have any oxygen or and IV. In fact he is feeling good enough to come home except for the fact that he has to stay around for the procedure on Monday. His correct room phone number 617-632-1831. Sorry for my previous mistake.
While we were in Mikes room they took his blood pressure ie: 130/88. I talked the nurse into taking mine at the same time 110/82. Do you think I’m getting to be like Nana?

Update on Uncle Mike 3.5

7:36 PM Friday June 20, 2003

I just returned from Boston with Nancy and Adam. Mike had the bronchoscopy today. When he returned to his room he had a very very bad migraine headache that caused him to throw up. I saw two nurses, two doctors, and one 4th year medical student name Susan Goo. Susan gave me more information than either of the doctors. The head doctor was very concerned about the migraine and the throwing up. He did a real complete exam of Mike(eyes, muscles, talk about type of throw up) and then gave him medication that put him to sleep.
When they did the procedure today they took a significant part of the mass on his lung out for biopsy. Behind the mass they found the infection that was causing his illness. That part of his lung was collapsed. They are going back in on Monday for another bronchoscopy to get the rest of the mass. So Mike is staying in Boston at least through Monday and maybe Tuesday.

Update on Uncle Mike 3

From Uncle Larry,
8:26 PM Thursday June 19, 2003

The last information that we had was from a telephone [call] that Flora had with Mike. The procedure will be done tomorrow because they were too busy at the Hospital to get it done today and Mike was tired of waiting with no food. The results of the procedure will determine what the doctors do next. When Mike checked into the hospital a young woman doctor told Nancy and Mike that a definite determination would be made on what the lump was on his lung. They might also, depending on the results of the Bronchospopy, put a shunt into his lung to get more air into that part of his lung. The thought being that it was possible that his continuing health problems might be a result of not getting enough air on that side of the lung. More to follow tomorrow.

Grandpa’s shoulder operation update

Uncle Larry writes:

2:31PM Thursday June 19, 2003
Grandpa’s operation on his shoulder is over and he is at home in his chair at the Hts house. The operation took 2.2 hours and the recovery went very quickly. Nana and Flora were in attendance throughout. Now they will have to be at his beck and call for 3 months. Dr. Wilsterman just called the house and talked to Flora. He said that he looked and looked but did not find a tear in the rotator cuff. But he repaired everything else and Grandpa should be fine. He did have to make one incision about one inch long and everything should be fine. “Take the ice, take the medicine and don’t let the pain get the best of you.”

Update on Uncle Mike

From Uncle Larry:

I just finished talking to Nancy at Oakwood Avenue. She is headed back up to Boston at noon today. Mike is located at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston, west building, FARR Building. Telephone 617-632-1821 direct. Dr. Finestone is the attending specialist. Today they are going to do a Bronchospopy. And then evaluate the results. The information I gave last night is pretty much correct. They are trying to get a definite determination on the blockage that was found last year. Visitors and phone call are welcome according to Nancy.

Uncle Mike’s in the Hospital

From Uncle Larry,

For those of you who do not know it, Mike is in the hospital. He checked into the emergency room at Falmouth on Sunday with pain under his left arm and shortness of breath. They said he had an pneumonia.
Please call me for more information not Nana or Grandpa.
They moved him up to Boston today so that they could get a definitive answer about the lump that is on his lung from last year that was not completely resolved.
Best Regards, Larry
